Newsletter

10 May 2024

We are delighted to share our latest fortnightly parent newsletter, brimming with updates, achievements, and the inspiring stories that make our school community so special. We hope you enjoy reading it.

Message from the Head

The summer sunshine has arrived and Feltonfleet is in full bloom. The learning noise, excitement, enthusiasm and chatter around the campus has been so energising this week. Our pupils are determined not to waste a moment of the warm weather which instantly lifts heads and spirits.

From our youngest learners in pre-prep to our seniors in the prep school, fostering personal development through learning, play and co-curricular activities is central to what we do. Whether it's forging friendships during playtime, immersing in Forest School adventures, or taking lessons outdoors, our pupils reap the benefits of an indoor and outdoor education.

Our campus and outdoor spaces are meticulously cared for by our excellent Facilities team, led by Martin and our Estates team Joel and Ashley. Together they provide learning areas in which pupils can learn and grow. From building resilience to fostering empathy and teamwork, the opportunity to be outside and moving around the campus nurtures important life skills.

In this newsletter, we feature Joel and Ashley, whose dedication ensures that the environment is primed for inspiring activities, sports fixtures, and events, all against the backdrop of a beautiful and calming campus. Additionally, alongside the Facilities Team, they ensure the seamless execution of our summer event calendar, ensuring every experience is memorable for our pupils and their parents.

Faris, our Head Girl, interviewed Joel and Ashley both earlier this week to find out about what they do and what they love about working at Feltonfleet.

I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events. Have a lovely weekend.

Why do you do what you do?

Joel - I have a passion for gardens and plant health and the more I learn about things the more connected I am to nature.

Ashley - I did a little gardening when I was younger and I love being outdoors where you can look out and gain knowledge about plant life.

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

What did you do before Feltonfleet?

Joel - I worked at another school St George’s doing a similar job to that which I’m doing now and my focus was on the sports facilities preparation.

Ashley - I worked at Polesden Lacey, National Trust and before that I gained a lot of gardening experience. When I came to Feltonfleet I wanted to do something different in a different setting.

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

What do you enjoy about working here?

Joel & Ashley - Feltonfleet is a beautiful template and there is a really positive atmosphere. It has a really nice feel. The pupils are lovely and the staff committed. It is a great place to work and there is always lots of work to be busy with. We like the fact that we can improve the site and put our stamp on things.

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

How do you keep on top of 25 acres?

Joel - It is always very busy. Fortunately, we have specialised areas. I look after the sports facilities preparation and Ashley the gardens, meaning between us we can do a large amount of work. There are lots of seasonal tasks to be done and once complete we move on to general tasks. It is all about teamwork and working together.

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

What are you proud of?

Joel - How you can see the health of the plants improving over the year and the fields recovery after weather and to see the ideas and impact we have on the grounds and overall improvement.

Ashley - The same as Joel and to see the clear improvement of the grounds. In particular the 4 types of hanging baskets this year which means I have drawn on experience of my time in a nursery where I prepared over 300!

Quotation Frame Black Quote Box Commas Marks

What are your ambitions for the site moving forward?

Joel & Ashley - We are focussed on continuing to improve diversity and ecology in addition to keeping it looking nice. We need to make sure the fields are sports ready and in other areas to encourage wildlife so we can create a green haven for pupils and staff to visit. We also have big planting projects a variety of interesting plants alongside the normal ones.

I think every single pupil appreciates your hard work and effort. You only need to look out to see the skills at work to see the amazing work. This means your contribution, and you, are helping us to make special memories of our time here. So thank you on behalf of all the community.

Latest ‘We Belong’ Podcast

In the latest episode of our We Belong podcast, we have interviewed one of our Year 8 pupils, Fred C.

Fred talks to us about the importance of names, the use of nicknames and how use of this key part of our identity can either exclude individuals in a community, or make them feel like they really belong.

Enjoy the podcast below, with sound on of course, which runs for approximately 12 minutes.

Coming Up: preparations for Pride Month

PRIDE MONTH takes place globally during June. This year our focus as a School will be on the theme of ‘Family,’ with age and stage appropriate input and discussion.

Activities will encourage conversations around embracing the unique dynamics of each family and the love and acceptance that a family unit supports, however it is made up.

EDI Forum

Thank you to those parents who attended our first EDI parents’ forum. We were pleased to welcome so many of you to get to know each other informally and have the opportunity to explore Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Feltonfleet and within the wider community.

As we continue on our EDI journey, we appreciate the input from you and your families and we were happy to have the occasion to share more widely our vision, the challenges we face and how we are addressing these as a School.

It was a valuable forum for the sharing of views and experiences from different perspectives. We really do welcome you all, so please look out for information about the next meeting in the Autumn term. This time the forum will direct its focus to celebrations and the recognition of events across the calendar, and we will be discussing the issue of tokenism versus authenticity and integrity.

life in pre-prep

In Pre-Prep, as well as focused concepts being taught in timetabled lessons, maths is incorporated into many aspects of our school day. Children learn so much from real life, everyday experiences.

Parents who attended our Maths Workshop last term heard and saw how we encourage a mastery approach to maths. This promotes a deeper, longer lasting understanding than relying on memory and rote learning, in the way that many of us as parents will remember from our school days.

In the maths classes of today, children are encouraged to reason and problem solve, asking their own questions about ‘why?’ and ‘why not?’ when it comes to proving and disproving their initial responses to mathematical questions.

The use of ‘concrete’ items, practical resources such as blocks, buttons, stones, pine cones or counters that can be moved, underpins much of a child’s mathematical learning. The ‘pictorial’ stage involves teachers and children drawing out their ideas or using a more visual model to support their understanding. The ‘abstract’ stage of thinking requires the young mathematician to hold information and manipulate it within their mind to work things out and that can also require the recall of ‘already known’ information, such as number bonds or multiplication facts.

The coincidental maths that happens includes references to the passing of time, in minutes, hours, days, months and seasons and more informally such as morning snack, lunchtime, hometime and other aspects of the timetable. Measuring with a variety of everyday items, such as tape measures, rulers and scales as well as direct comparison happens as part of so many activities at school and home. When given the inspiration and resources in a supportive, interesting environment, children use and apply mathematical skills of subitising and estimation to find out ‘how many?’.

Our extensive provision of block play supports the understanding of size, shape, weight, symmetry and pattern as children create and discuss their models. Maths is everywhere when you know what to look for!

Life in Lower school

Year 3 Trip to Winchester Science Centre

Year 3 embarked on a journey of exploration and discovery as they visited the Winchester Science Museum last week. In the planetarium, the pupils watched the night sky come alive above them and learnt about constellations, planets, and the vastness of space. The excitement continued in the interactive exhibits and in a workshop where pupils built and launched their own rockets. There were loud screams of joy and anticipation as their creations whirred and moved around the room in an attempt to travel the furthest. The Year 3 staff were impressed with the impeccable manners and keen curiosity shown by the pupils; it was a very positive trip!

Year 4 English

On Friday 3 May, Mr Kumar brought some Year 6 pupils across to the Lower School to teach Year 4 all about similes, metaphors and persuasive techniques. The Year 6 groups had worked extremely hard at preparing well-structured and engaging lessons, all of which had a range of fun activities and self-created resources. Some of the activities included rap songs, online Blooket quizzes, speeches on 'banning homework' (which seemed a very popular task) and a classic game called 'Stop the Bus'. It was lovely seeing the Year 4 pupils engaging well with the tasks and witnessing the Year 6 pupils nurturing and scaffolding their understanding. It was a very worthwhile activity, which benefited them all hugely, providing an opportunity for them to make connections and build relationships across the year groups.

Focus on Year 5 Design & Technology

Celebrating Creativity and Culture: Year 5 Pupils Designing Koinobori Windsocks.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and traditions, this term our Year 5 pupils have researched the Koinobori windsocks.

Koinobori, which translates to "carp streamer," holds deep cultural significance in Japan. Traditionally, these colourful windsocks are flown during the Golden Week festival in May, a time of celebration and reflection. Originally intended to bestow strength, courage, and luck upon young male samurai warriors, the festival has evolved into a jubilant occasion honouring all children.

The creative process began with designing unique patterns for the windsocks. Encouraged to draw inspiration from the festival and Japanese culture, rather than replicating existing designs, the pupils unleashed their imagination. Using vibrant sublimation papers, the pupils brought their designs to life with vivid colours and intricate details using the die cutter.

Having printed their designs using the heat press, the pupils then embark on the final stage of their project: hand-stitching. Adding ribbon streamers to flutter in the breeze, the Koinobori windsocks are beginning to take shape, each one a unique expression of creativity and cultural appreciation.

Focus on Year 7 Computing

Year 7 pupils have been coding their own logic puzzle designs in Swift, the programming language used across Apple devices to code popular apps. Blending creativity with precision, they have mapped out their own puzzle designs using specific coordinates, learning how to apply ever increasing methods of coding efficiency (Coding Concept 7: For-In loops; nested loops) to achieve quicker and more effective results.

As they turn to explore new ways to code effective solutions to their puzzles, guiding their chosen characters around the route to collect the Gems and to toggle the closed Switches, they are using conditionals (If, Else If, Else) to code more effective logic to give their characters decision making capabilities along the way.

Through developing an understanding of 10 key Computer Science concepts, which in turn support pupils’ ability to decompose problems and demonstrate computational thinking, these algorithms directly support pupils’ consideration of Rule Based vs. Data Driven models within our Artificial Intelligence curriculum.

Performing Arts

GUILDHALL MUSIC WORKSHOPS

On Thursday 25 April, all of the children in the Year 5 and the Year 6 choirs were privileged to spend the day with two guest music teachers from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Esther Hargittai, a Kodály specialist and conductor who trained at the Liszt Academy of Music and Michael Spence, the Coordinator of the Kodály and Dalcroze programmes at the Junior Guildhall, spent a wonderful day sharing music with the children.

The Year 5 pupils had a fun afternoon playing singing games. The Year 6 pupils spent the morning focusing on learning the songs that they will perform on 1 June, together with the Guildhall Kodály choir, at Milton Hall in the Barbican. They learned new warm ups and lots of vocal techniques and through focus on various rhythmic and melodic elements, they really got to know their new repertoire.

It was wonderful for the children to have this experience and it was a very enjoyable day.

If you are free and would like to support the Year 6 pupils in their concert in June, do come along. It is a big venue!

Years 5 & 6 PARENT PUPIL BOOK CLUB

As you know we love a book club and this time it was the turn of Year 5 & 6 pupils and their parents to come along. Our read this term was Tom Palmer’s ‘After the War: from Auschwitz to Ambleside’ a thought provoking tear jerker of a read. Written with emotion on every page, based on first hand accounts - pupils and parents alike found the book incredibly moving.

Summer 1945. The Second World War is finally over and Yossi, Leo and Mordecai are among three hundred children who arrive in the English Lake District. Having survived the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, they've finally reached a place of safety and peace, where they can hopefully begin to recover. Based on the real events and lives of the Windermere Boys - a group of 300 refugee children who survived the concentration camps of WWII and were relocated to Cumbria.

It also stayed true to the sadly terrible experiences of those children. Tom Palmer, the author recently visited us and told us that camp survivors asked him to tell the truth about their ordeals, which is what the author has done, in a very age appropriate way. The brutality of the camps, how trust would need to be built back up and how much meaning can be in one little bar of chocolate or writing names in an exercise book.

We found ourselves feeling that every adult should read this book, especially those in power and wanting to learn more about history. So much so that we looked up the history of the Red Cross and how many days of peace there have been around the World since WWII, look it up, it’s shocking.

‘After the War’ is suitable from Year 5 up depending as always on your child.

Skandar and the Chaos Trials

By A F Steadman

Oliver P was lucky enough to go to a pre-release event with A. F Steadman and hear her talking about her latest book in the Skandar series. Also, to get an advanced copy, we are very jealous. Although our library copy is now available.

Oliver spoke to the class during his library session about why he loves the excitement and magic in the Skandar stories and what it was like to meet the author. Several pupils now want to read the books. Well done Oliver.

Perfect for fans of Harry Potter or How to Train Your Dragon.

These are not fluffy unicorns but dangerous, edgy unicorns. All three Skandar adventures are full of heroic deeds, friendship, mystery and of course fiendish villains.

In this book to survive their third year of training, Skandar and his friends must compete in terrifying trials across the Island’s elemental zones. Plus Skandar’s sister Kenna has finally made it to the Eyrie, but she forges a bond with a wild unicorn and as things go wrong on the Island, Kenna is blamed.

A brilliant, but challenging read, full of amazing description and top class vocabulary.

Shooting Success

History

Feltonfleet is a member of the Prep Schools Rifle Association, originally formed in 1906. Over 100 schools joined in quick succession, with member schools using both Air Rifle and “Minature Rifles”, mostly .22” calibre and at 25 yards.

Trophies

The trophies donated by various organisations from that time are magnificent (worth thousands of pounds) many of which schools still compete for both on a termly and an annual basis. Notable amongst these are the St Patrick’s and the St George’s shields, both of which Feltonfleet have won and were displayed in Reception until quite recently.

St Andrew’s Shield, St Patrick’s Shield, Lord Roberts Cup, St George’s Shield

Competitions

Feltonfleet has a very successful shooting record due to the high level of coaching from Ms Jeanette Lievers and Mr Andrew Lothian and the commitment of the pupils.

The St Patrick’s and St George’s Shields are both shot for by teams of 4, unsupported, which means that though shooting in the prone position, the weight of the rifle is borne by a sling – a technique that takes a bit of work to master.

The St Patrick’s was won last term with a score of 383. Feltonfleet scored 381. We missed winning in the Autumn term by 1 point, 385 to 384, having equalled the record score. The present team will be competing for the St Patrick’s over the next fortnight or so.

The St George’s Shield is shot for at 50 metres each Summer term. The team will soon be travelling to a nearby range to shoot the targets which will then be posted to the scorer. Wish us luck!

When pupils start shooting with .22” rifles at Feltonfleet, the weight of the rifle is taken by a rice filled bag. Funnily enough, this is referred to as “supported”!

Trophies in the “supported” category are the Hammond Cup and the Lord Roberts Cup. The Hammond is for teams of 4, the Lord Roberts for 8. We won both last term, the Hammond by a close 1 point, the Roberts by 13 points.

In addition to the postal matches above, Feltonfleet has entered a league with teams of 4, both unsupported (Division 1) and supported (Division 2). Each team shoots twice per term. Feltonfleet won both Divisions last term. Regrettably the trophies for both matches have been misplaced and are residing in another school’s trophy cupboard.

Given that we were unable to shoot for the latter half of the Spring Term and the whole of last Summer Term, the team have done extremely well to reach such a high standard so quickly and to be finishing in the top 3 places in every match we enter.

Of the 5 postal matches we entered last term, Feltonfleet came 2nd in the St Patrick’s and won the other 4.

As a school, we are extremely fortunate to have 2 ranges.

Unsupported Team from: Ollie M (Capt), Tilly Q (Ladies Captain), Louis Q, Ralph S and Rose E.

Supported Teams: Charlie St, Aisha F, Amani F, Makar S, Annabelle B, Ewan B, Elliot C, Alexander DC, Toby H and Fred C.

GOLF - IAPS Competition

Thursday 2nd May saw 6 pupils play in the U11 and U13 golf IAPs competition. Being held at Minchampton Golf Course, Christopher, Emily and Jay (competing in the U11s category) and Elliot, Ollie & Harry (U13s) all turned in some fantastic scores and should be proud of their performances especially considering the weather they had to battle around the course. They all represented the school brilliantly and we were proud to celebrate the success of our U13 boys who came 2nd in the team event and Emily who came 2nd Overall Girl in the U11s. A phenomenal achievement!

Years 7 & 8 Athletics Meet

On Monday 29th April Feltonfleet hosted Danes Hill, City of London Freemans and Eagle House for a Year 7 and 8 athletics meet.

The format held all the classic track events from 100m sprints to 4x100m relay and field events such as the javelin, long and high jump. The competition was fierce with all of our guests bringing their best to compete.

Mercifully the weather had decided to suddenly become summer-like and for a few hours as the competition flowed we were treated to glorious sunshine. All of our boys and girls performed with great athleticism.

The overall winners of the afternoon were Danes Hill. Though our pupils expressed how much they had enjoyed themselves and their desire to do it all again soon.

Tennis

With the Surrey Tennis Leagues new format in play, we have had a jam-packed tennis schedule so far this term and even managed to squeeze in a fixture at the end of last term.

Unfortunately the weather hasn't been on our side and there have been a fair few rain affected matches, but it has done nothing to dampen our spirits or enthusiasm.

U13 Boys - season so far:

Following a narrow but competitive loss to Amesbury, the boys faced a triangular against two of the toughest opponents in the league, in the shape of RGS and Reeds. This match is still to be completed due to the rain, and although up against it, the boys are still very much in with a chance. All four boys, D Greve, M Greve, H Macey and O Wilcox have dovetailed superbly and it has been a pleasure to see their tennis develop.

Surrey Schools Festival

A very well done to the four boys (D Greve, M Shchilov, H Macey & O Wilcox) who represented Feltonfleet in both the U14 Tier 1 and Tier 2 pots. Against some of the best tennis players in the country (some ranked within the top ten of the UK in their age groups), we played some remarkably consistent and tenacious tennis. Both pairs won a match and lost two, so although we didn't quite make it through to the knock out phase of the competition, should feel extremely proud of their achievements. It was an incredible event and a real honour to be invited to compete at such a prestigious tournament.

U13 Girls - Season so far:

Injuries, fixture clashes and the inevitable rain has really impacted the girls' season so far, but everyone that has represented the school and this team have been superb, not just with their tennis on the court but with their camaraderie and resilience throughout the fixtures. We battled hard against Amesbury, Tormead and St Catherine's but unfortunately couldn't quite get the wins, though a wonderful win against St Catherine's from S. Samonas and C. Attenborough took the overall match right down to the wire. Thank you to all the girls that have represented Feltonfleet this season so far, especially those that have stepped in last minute due to some of the reasons mentioned above. Well done (C Attenborough, S Samonas, C Harris, Ai Farah, S Rahilly, C Frost and Am Farah).

U11 Boys - Season so far:

Another tough draw was handed out to us, with the likes of Cranmore, Amesbury, Hoe Bridge and Willington all being in our table...but in typical stoic Feltonfleet fashion, the boys rose to the occasion. A comprehensive 4-0 win over Amesbury gave us the perfect platform to build on, followed by (so far) the match of the season against Cranmore. This two and a half hour epic, was settled in a Championship tie-break, facing a boy ranked inside the top 15 in the UK. Well done to M. Shchilov and J. Kumar, for steering us through that tense battle so calmly. With confidence sky high, further comprehensive wins against Hoe Bridge and Willington sealed our position at the top of the table and ensures our progress to the quarter-finals of the knockout competition. Brilliant effort from all the boys who have represented this team. (M. Shchilov, W. Longcroft, B. Ford, J. Kumar and G. Bain).

Outside of school... Congratulations to our Yr8 pupil, Daniel G who won an LTA Grade 5 Under 16 event at Tennis Avenue in New Malden on Monday. A great performance battling through four rounds in less than ideal weather and playing up in an U16 event. Daniel is fully committed to his tennis and it’s brilliant to see his hard work pay off. Well done.

girls’ sport round up

From thrilling victories to valuable lessons learned, the girls have been showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on the cricket pitch so far this term.

In the U11 Surrey Starburst Cup, the girls displayed remarkable determination and skill. They secured a fantastic win against Cleves, demonstrating some powerful batting and excellent running between the wickets. It was a nail-biting encounter against St George's but thanks to Chloe A's stunning wicket on the last ball, where middle stump went flying, they managed to secure a draw. The girls narrowly missed out on a bonus point, meaning that St George’s qualified for the next round.

Our 1st XI Girls' team also had a momentous victory in the first round of the ESCA U13 Girls’ Hardball competition. They triumphed over St George's for the first time in several years, highlighting their dedication and hard work on the field. The girls scored 149-6 off 20 overs leaving St George’s to chase. Charlie A had a strong day with the bat scoring 35*. After 14 overs the girls had kept St George’s to 77-7 and were looking strong. They bowled brilliantly with Amelie T going 4-17 off 4 overs.

While the senior girls' matches faced some disappointment due to cancellations, we remain optimistic about brighter weather in the coming weeks. Despite the challenges, our senior teams have been having a commendable season so far, with undefeated performances against Hall Grove, King Edward's Witley, and Danes Hill. A special mention to Tahlia T for her outstanding 50* against Hall Grove and to Libby R for her impressive performance, taking 2 catches and 2 wickets.

BOYS’ SPORT update

It’s been another hugely successful couple of weeks for the boys on the cricket pitch. Our U10s saw a clean sweep of City of London Freemans and will be looking to double this up by completing a second innings win against Downsend on Thursday. Our U11s also had whitewashed Downsend, which included our A team winning in a ‘Double’ cup match, meaning we move on into the later stages of both the Prep Schools Cup and the Verney Cup, trying to retain both after the outstanding season our side saw last year, watch this space! Turning to our senior sides, the boys 1-4ths completed an awesome block fixture win over Cranmore, winning (again) all 4 fixtures. We then all hammered Parkside, this time our 5th team was in the action as well, bringing home 5 more wins! These 2 weeks of fixtures also included our 1st Team moving ahead in both the Watchyn Evans Trophy, beating St. Georges Weybridge on the last ball! As well as advancing in the Prep Schools Cup with our victory over Parkside!

All the pupils are enjoying honing their cricket skills now the sun has appeared!

Eli Explains

We’re delighted to share with you the very first episode of ‘Eli Explains’, brought to you by Eli S (6JBu) who has created his first broadcast in our co-curricular club ‘Podcasting PEA’, which he attends at Feltonfleet.

Just click on the link below (make sure sound is turned on) and enjoy! We’re sure there will be many more episodes to come. The podcast runs for 2 minutes 18 seconds.

House Chess

Feltonfleet’s inaugural House Chess Challenge commenced back in February. We anticipated perhaps… 30 or so pupils may sign up? How wrong we were! A staggeringly impressive 137 pupils from Year 3 to Year 8, all pretty competent chess players, signed up to put their chess skills to the test and to represent their House. Some of these pupils bowed out after 1 round, others after 2…and so it continued, for months! At one point we thought it possible our surrounding roadworks may finish before this House competition!! 136 games of chess later, we were left with our six finalists; in the Lower School, Matilda B (for the Foxes) and Cameron W (for the Tigers), in the Middle School, Miron S (for the Otters) and James W (for the Foxes) and in the Upper School Ewan B (for the Badgers) and Rocky Z (for the Foxes).

Throughout this House Challenge we have been immensely impressed not only with the chess skills demonstrated, but also with the incredibly high levels of sportsmanship and the mature manner in which all the pupils conducted themselves. Each game of chess started and ended with a handshake, and also with a smile! Losing in a knock-out competition like this can be very emotive, all credit to our resilient pupils for bowing out with such good grace.

A big thank you must go to all members of staff who gave their time to help us supervise the initial rounds, and especially to those staff members who were enlisted to turn odd numbers even!

Our finalists will be suitably celebrated in an upcoming assembly, when the House Points earned per House, across this whole competition, will also be revealed. For now though, our huge congratulations go to our 3 winners; Cameron W, Miron S and Rocky Z!.

Enjoy the highlights from the Challenge in the footage below, which runs for approximately 4 minutes 30 seconds.

Supporting OASIS

Last week the Year 8 House Charity Co-Ordinators visited Oasis Charity in Cobham. The pupils were thrilled to present a cheque to Oasis for the money raised from a variety of events from the last academic year.

During the visit the pupils spent time playing games with the children and saw the wonderful work Oasis does to support local families.

Thank you to our generous Feltonfleet community for continuing to support our local charities.

Earth Day

Week 2 of the Summer Term saw Mr Rochford lead an assembly on Earth Day. He described how and why Earth Day was founded and what the focus is on for this year's theme. Mr Rochford asked pupils to reflect on why plastics are dangerous to Humans and then listed ways in which staff and pupils could use less of single use plastics. His assembly finished by showing a powerful advert on how humans seem to be oblivious to their consumption of plastic.

In Year 5 and Year 6 Science, the pupils have been studying Earth Day, focusing on the theme "Planet vs. Plastic." They have explored the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and discussed ways to reduce plastic usage to protect the planet. This included topics such as recycling, the effects of plastic on wildlife, and sustainable alternatives to plastic products. They created posters to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the Earth and taking action to reduce plastic pollution.

Maths Wizards

On Wednesday, four Year 5 pupils headed to Hampton School to compete in their annual Maths Wizard Competition. Designed to build confidence and stretch and challenge enthusiastic young mathematicians, the emphasis is on having fun at the same time as putting their number crunching skills to a serious test!

The journey there was packed with warm up questions, from the Fibonnaci sequence, to 5/9 as a percentage; this was a strong team! A warm welcome awaited us, and the team was soon settled ready to begin. Five challenging rounds followed, with a crucial break in the middle for fresh air, donuts and juice.

I was thoroughly impressed by all four pupils’ approach to the morning, they worked brilliantly together, gave it their all, were polite and good humoured and did themselves proud. We missed out on a top 3 position (there were over 20 prep schools present) and await our over all position by email. Regardless of where we came, it was an excellent morning’s work…if you can ever call doing maths ‘work’?!

I would’ve given the morning 10/10, but as we didn’t win I’ve got to drop it to a 9/10! It was loads of fun though.
